MANCHESTER UNITED INTERESTED IN DIEGO LOPEZ

The Next Great One

Move over Kobe, Lebron, CP3. Make room for Kevin Durant. I was watching the NBA's rookies vs sophomores game and one thing that stood out to me was the play of Kevin Durant. Durant was draining 3's from way behind the 3 point line on his way to scoring 46 points. He also won the NBA's HORSE competition and that ugly looking trophy. Durant is only 20 years old but it is obvious that he is the NBA's next young superstar. He is 5th in the NBA and scoring at 25.5 per night. This goes unnoticed because he plays for such a bad team. Durant is the bright spot on a terrible Oklahoma City Thunder team.

Based on the first two years of their career K.D. looks like the winner in the 2007 NBA draft. While Greg Oden has been injured and put up average numbers, Durant has played up to the level of a NBA All Star. I think that Greg Oden will turn out to be a solid pro and even make a few All Star teams. He reminds me of an Emeka Okafor, Dikembe Mutombo, Marc us Camby type center. A solid player but not a superstar. Durant has the scoring ability of a Dominique Wilkins but with the shooting ability of a Ray Allen. Durant still needs to gain some weight and add more muscle to his frame. This weekend was probably just the beginning of a string of All Star appearances for Kevin Durant.

W-League

The Carolina RailHawks announced on Wednesday night the formation of a USL W-League women's soccer team for the 2008 season.
The Carolina RailHawks Women will play home games in the Atlantic Division of the USL W-League at SAS Soccer Park in Cary. The team will be coached by Jay Howell, Director of Coaching for the Capital Area Soccer League and will be comprised by some of the best talent the Triangle has to offer. Star players from Duke, NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill as well as Wake Forest University and UNC-Greensboro have already agreed to be a part of the team.
"The Triangle has a tradition of producing fantastic women's soccer teams and players at the club and collegiate level," said Jay Howell. "Like the Raleigh Wings and the Carolina Courage in the past, this team will showcase the best soccer talent from this area and beyond. I am excited and honored to coach the new W-League team. This will be a wonderful opportunity to work with high quality players, and ! to represent the Carolina RailHawks organization."

Wambach leads U.S. women to a 6-2 win

Abby Wambach scored two goals to help the U.S. women's soccer team rout Canada, 6-2, in an exhibition game Saturday night.
Kristine Lilly and Lindsay Tarpley each had a goal and an assist in the United States' highest-scoring game in 16 matches.
The Americans, preparing for the Women's World Cup in September, have won seven straight games and are 20-0-3 since their loss to Germany on penalty kicks in the 2006 Algarve Cup final. The win extended the United States' unbeaten streak against Canada to 13 (11-0-2).

Hazing and alcohol at Santa Clara???

"Fourteen members of the Santa Clara University women's soccer team have been suspended for one game for undisclosed reasons, the university's athletic department announced today.
The suspended team members will serve their suspension over two games. Seven will be suspended for the August 25 game against Wake Forest and seven will sit out the August 27 game against Utah. Both games are at home, part of the Santa Clara Adidas Classic tournament.
"These players are good kids and I stand behind them. However, they made a mistake and they have acknowledged that. They all have accepted the consequences of their actions," Head Coach Jerry Smith said. "We have now put this issue behind us and we will focus on our goal of winning a national championship for Santa Clara University."
The university did not disclose the nature of the rules violation and a team spokesman did not return calls for comment on the suspension.

Why is Mitts playing?

The BC Fan was watching the updates of people who were watching webcasts of the Germany match (ah, the wonders of modern technology), and reports that the company line about solid defense was rather kind to Mitts, quelle surprise. The mystery is how not one, not two, but three generations of WNT coaches continue to play this semi-disaster area at the highest level. She must be a great practice player.

Proteas shine in Cobras win

Charl Langeveldt, who by all accounts has recovered from his poor emotional state after turning his back on the Proteas, took 4 for 26 in his 4 overs as the Nashua Cape Cobras beat the Dolphins by 11 runs in a Pro20 match at Sahara Park Newlands.
Another seemingly forgotten Proteas player, Herschelle Gibbs hit 60 off 42 balls as the Cobras set a total of 143 in 20 overs.
The Dolphins only managed 132 for 7.
Meanwhile, Loots Bosman was even better hitting 94 off 54 balls as the Eagles thrashed Zimbabwe by 98 runs in a rain affected match.

Stormers Confident of Jean's Fitness

The Vodacom Stormers believe their inspirational captain Jean de Villiers will be fit to take on the Highlanders at Newlands tomorrow.

The skipper's been out with flu all week and there are genuine concerns of whether or not he'll be fit to lead the side. In the case of him not being well-enough to take the field, Peter Grant will no doubt fill the void at inside centre.

Coach Rassie Erasmus has made six changes to the team, with Schalk Ferreira making his seasonal debut at prop in place of the injured JD Moller.

Kick off is at 17:00 tomorrow.

Monty Approaches Century

Percy Montgomery won't talk about it. The approaching milestone of 100 caps for the Springboks has captivated the country, but for the man itself, it's all about 96.

"I was lucky enough to get my 95th cap against Wales," smiles Montgomery. "So now it's all about 96. I'm not looking further than that, I don't want to jinx it!"

The most capped Bok in the country came off the bench during Saturday's 43-17 victory over Wales, and slotted in seamlessly at outside centre, scoring a fine try. It was a testament to the player's adaptability, and to his now indisputable pedigree.

"I actually enjoyed the run at 13.! It was a different feeling sitting on the bench, but I'll always do whatever the coach asks of me. My goal is to win back the No 15 jersey, but of course in Conrad Jantjes I have formidable opposition. He has been in outstanding form in the Vodacom Super 14 and he had a great game on Saturday."

Since arriving back from Perpignan, Montgomery has added as much off the field as he has on it. He commands unrivalled respect throughout the Bok squad, and has embraced the new philosophy of Springbok coach Peter de Villiers.

"It's been a very exciting few weeks. Peter has a lot of ideas and I've really enjoyed working with him so far. The game plan we're working on is designed to exploit the ELVs, and that's been a new challenge.

Montgomery has played 95 tests for the Boks. He has scored 878 points, including 25 tries, 150 conversions, 145 penalties and six drop goals.

Smit to Retun Home

Losing John Smit for the rest of the overseas leg of the Tri-Nations is the worst thing that could've happened to the Springboks.

Smit will miss Saturday's second test against New Zealand and the test against Australia in two weeks time due to a groin injury sustained in their 19 - 8 loss to the All Blacks on Saturday. Smit was upended by lock Brad Thorn in the sixth minute of the match and that's where the injury came from. Thorn has subsequently been given a slap on the wrist and has been suspended for one test.

South Africa were right in the game before Smit limped off the field, but ! with all respect to Victor Matfield, it all went pear-shaped from there. Smit's leadership was sorely missed when the Springboks conceded a try early in the second half and had to withstand wave after wave of All Black attack.

Coach Peter de Villiers was quoted as saying it'll do them no good to sulk over the situation. They'll just have to back Matfield as the new team leader. The Boks are fortunate in that Matfield captained the side against Italy a few weeks ago.

Western Province hooker Schalk Brits has been flown up to New Zealand has backup for Smit.

How combat Olympic blues

Now that the Olympics are over it seems Chinese sports fans are feeling the loss.

Many Chinese do not know what to do with themselves now that the Beijing Olympics is over a local Chinese paper reported. Experts says that sports fans and television viewers are feeling lost and are prone to whining.

Advice to those who are suffering from these conditions are to get more rest, participate in outdoor activites as well as making more friends!

Stoner in pain

Requiring an operation on his troublesome scaphoid, Casey Stoner is likely to miss some of the preseason tests for 2009. There is also an outside chance that the World Champion will not complete the current season. Stoner has admitted that he has been riding in a lot of pain recently, and that can go some way to explaining his lack of pace compared to last year.

Big win for Nashua Cape Cobras

Four wickets for Claude Henderson and three wickets for Rory Klienveld restricted and eventually helped to bowl out the Titans for 107 in their MTN Domestic Championship match. The Cobras won by 101 runs.

The Cobras had scored 208, thanks to great half-centuries from JP Duminy and Cobras captain Justin Ontong.
Duminy, whose exhilarating 54 of 61-balls featured strokes of genuine class, was caught in the deep after going for one big hit too many. He hit 6 fours and a six.
Vernon Philander and Ryan Canning, pictured above, weighed in with 32 and ! 24 respectively, but disappointment for opener Andrew Puttick, who went for 0, and Herschelle Gibbs for 12.

View from the Pitlane with Brian Sims

Hey Jenson, what are you doing? Just as we were all agreeing that this was turning out to be the most unpredictable F1 season in years, we suddenly wake up to the fact that you've now won 4 out of the first 5 races! Play the game, mate, this wasn't how it was meant to be! We went through this not so long ago, when a certain German showed the rest of the F1 journeymen how to drive. Remember how monotonous that became?

The trouble is, everything in Barcelona looked great, with a Ferrari! resurgence on the cards, Vettel on fire again, and Webber showing an aggressive streak that has been sadly missing for a long time. The organisers were even thinking about having to widen the podium to accommodate the clown-like grin of Rubens Barichello, as he showed us all his true talent by threatening to take pole position. A lot of people were hoping that this might be his weekend after all.

Then there was the superb last ditch lap of Button's, ironically helped, it seemed, by adopting Barichello's settings on the car. The chance had gone! We all knew that pole position in Barcelona usually translates into a race win, so that was that, or so it appeared.

Unfortunately, Rubens hadn't read the script, or didn't agree with it, because the lights went out and there was the popular little Brazilian ahead of the pack coming out of the first bend. Sadly for the Barichello fans, any chance of an upset disappeared when the Button camp within the Braw! n Team switched him onto a 2-stop strategy and Rubens became t! he prove rbial tail-gunner, as is his wont in F1 it seems. Shame! He would have been a popular winner.

What are the odds on there being some major personnel changes at Ferrari ? Ferrari boss Montezumelo stated a couple of races ago that he wouldn't stand by and watch Ferrari become a laughing stock in F1. Really? Then he needs to act fast, because they are rapidly becoming the circus act of the Championship.

Imagine being Massa and battling for 63 laps to keep F1's youngest hot-shot, Vettel, behind you, only to then be calmly told to move over because your petrol pump attendant has short-changed you at the last service station! If that wasn't bad enough news for Felippe, can you think what went through his mind when he then had to let Alonso through so that the Spaniard could get some more points. Unbelievable stuff!

Not only was it inexcusable to run so low on fuel that Massa had to back right off for the rest of the race, but the problem was com! pounded by not bringing him in the moment they realised the problem, for a tyre change and a top-up. Add to that the Raikkonen fiasco and it is obvious that there are some serious issues that need to be resolved at Maranello. Michael, keep your mobile switched on……you might be heading up a F1 team real soon!

Berger plays games with Bourdais

It is reported that Toro Rosso may wait until the end of the season to confirm their driver line-up for 2009. This obviously leaves more uncertainty for former 4 time Champcar titlist, Sebastien Bourdais. This is reminiscent of what happened to former Toro Rosso driver Scott Speed, who is still a partner of Red Bull and is a hot property in NASCAR. Team co-owner, Gerhard Berger just left Speed swinging in the wind and he is doing the same to Bourdais.

Even though Berger has admitted that Bourdais is doing exactly what they expected from him, he and the team are delaying confirming the Frenchman. They have a car that can regularly in the points and they have a driver in the team that can provide some continuity for development; not to mention that he is experienced, quick and level headed.

Being a former driver, Berger knows what job security and confidence can do, he also knows what fear can do for motivation. I think Berger is employing fear to motivate Bourdais and is simply trying to bully him. However, I do not think a driver of Bourdais' cloth is motivated by fear tactics and is more motivated if he knows the team is providing him equipment that will suit him. If he wan! ts a major manufacturer to back the team, he needs to show som! e stabil ity in his decisions and with the drivers. He can start but confirming the status of a quality driver.

Liverpool FC Deny Interest In Werder Bremen Star Aaron Hunt

Liverpool today distanced themselves from reports linking them with Werder Bremen hot-shot Aaron Hunt.

It had been claimed in the German media the Reds are planning a January swoop for the 23-year-old, who has scored three goals in his last three Bundesliga appearances.

Hunt – who is a German Under-21 international – is out of contract at the end of the current campaign and has caught the eye of a number of clubs across Europe.

The same reports also suggested Rafa Benitez was preparing to tempt Bremen into doing business early by using Ryan Babel as part o! f a swop deal.

However, he is not on Benitez's January shopping list and the club does not anticipate conducting any major business when the transfer window opens in the new year.

Benitez was expected back at Melwood today following the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea but the next week will be quiet for the manager, given that so many of his squad are on international duty.

However, he will be keeping a close eye on Alberto Aquilani, as the £20m midfielder continues to edge closer to making his first team debut.

Aquilani had major ankle surgery earlier in the summer but he has revealed the level of care he has received on Merseyside is light years ahead of the attention he was given in Roma.

"I changed many doctors at Roma and there was never any consistency in the treatment to cure me," Aquilani said.

"I have noted a big difference here (at Liverpool). From the first moment I was told I would not be rushed back into a! ction to avoid further problems.

"Now I cannot wait! to put all my physical problems behind me, so I can finally get my career started with Liverpool."

Steven Gerrard, meanwhile, has made it clear he is being driven by the motivation of winning medals as he closes in on another major milestone.

The Liverpool captain could make his 500th appearance for the club against Birmingham on November 9 and would join exalted company.

But though it would a massive achievement to reach 500, he is desperate to add to his medal haul – sooner rather than later.

"When the people above you on the list of appearances are people like Kenny Dalglish then it's special to be in that kind of company.

"Kenny is a legend, one of the greatest footballers of all time so to have played for this club as many times as he has is extra special.

"But Kenny won league titles, European Cups and every other kind of honour in his career and that's what I want for myself and for the team."

Referee Demoted After Liverpool FC Beach Ball Controversy

Mike Jones, the referee who incorrectly awarded Darren Bent's goal for Sunderland against Liverpool FC on Saturday, will not officiate in the Premier League this weekend.

Bent's shot struck a beach ball thrown from the visiting section at the Stadium of Light and deflected past Liverpool FC goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

FIFA's laws of the game state "the referee should stop, suspend or abandon the match because of outside interference of any kind", meaning the goal should have been ruled out and the match re-started with a drop ball.

Jones will take charge of the Championship game between Peterborough and Scunthorpe at London Road.

Jones' mistake has been widely criticised by a number of his former colleagues with Jeff Winter, Dermot Gallagher and Graham Poll all stating their surprise that such a basic error was made in a Premier League game.

Gallagher said: "It was a gla! ring error and it's difficult to fathom.

"Even referees in local parks should know that if there is an outside agent on the pitch then you stop the game and restart it with a drop ball.

"When you set out as a referee you learn the laws of the game and everyone should know it.

"For it to happen at this level and in such a high-profile game is unbelievable. Any one of the four officials should have stepped in."

The possibility of the game being replayed has been rejected by the Premier League.

Emiliano Insua Looking To Continue Hot Form With Liverpool

Liverpool full-back, Emiliano Insua, 20, is looking to add to his midweek goal - a sensational long-range volley struck against Arsenal in the fourth round of the League Cup at Ashburton Grove.

The burgeoning Argentinean, who has one international cap, was delighted to ripple the net in the first half, despite his side going on to lose 2-1 due to a second half Nicklas Bendtner effort.

He told the club's official website: "It was a really nice moment for me. I chested the ball down and just decided to hit it. I couldn't believe it went in but it was nice and hopefully I can score more goals for the team in the future."

Despite the defeat, Liverpool are st! ill on a high in the league after they rectified their poor run of form with a weekend win over Manchester United.

"We have to try and win at Fulham and then in the Champions League.

"We had a big win against United and we have always had belief in ourselves. We know we can do good things as a team. We have a very good team and we need to keep going."

He continued: "It has been a really good season for me, for my club and country, but I have to keep it going.

"I know I can keep on improving and I have a lot of confidence."

Cincinnati Bengals Draft History

With the NFL Draft upcoming this weekend, (Be sure to see the NKYSportsWorld Mock Draft) We have been spending a lot of time debating where the Bengals should go with their #6 pick in the draft. I wanted to take a look back at how the Bengals have fared with their top three draft picks. If you look at the production of just the Top 3 picks in the draft they have really struggled finding talent in the early rounds. So I caution Bengals fans not to get too hung up on fixing all of the issues with this draft as it may not happen.

Trade Alonzo for WHO??

I don't report on a lot of rumors that I read online because most of them are just bull. Did you see the rumors today that the Reds were looking to deal with Toronto...one rumor had the Reds trading Yonder Alonzo for yes, you guessed it, Scott Rolen!

Please, Walt, tell me this is just a terribly ugly rumor!

UPDATE> The Reds did in fact trade for Scott Rolen today. They traded Zach Stewart, Josh Roenicke and Edwin Encarnacion. I was a supporter of Edwin's for a long time, but backed off of that just this year. He has not realized his full potential and could use the change of scenery. Rolen doesn't have a big power bat any more and has some health concerns, but when he can stay in the lineup he is still a nice right handed bat, hits for a nice average. He is also a really good third basemen...not quite the arm he once had but he can certainly pick it over at third. I am okay with the deal now.

UFC Rankings (5-29-08)

-Keefe

I am so excited and nervous about the Celtics being up 3-2 in the series with the Pistons that I don't even know what to say. I don't want to jinx anything. Instead I will just watch Game 6 tomorrow night and try to enjoy it. To help take my mind off of the magnitude of that game, I've decided to update my UFC Rankings. Here is how I rank the best fighters in each weight class. Also I have added a fight I would like to see, that has not been scheduled, in each division.

Heavyweight:

1. Randy Couture
2. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
3. Fabricio Werdum
4. Brandon Vera
5. Frank Mir
6. Gabriel Gonzaga
7. Heath Herring
8. Cheick Kongo
9. Brock Lesnar
10. Shane Carwin

Yes, I still have Randy Couture in the top spot. He is still the Champ right? But what a terrible division. The 9th best guy hasn't won a fight in the UFC and it was hard to find a 10th heavyweight at all. The ! loss of Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski quickly made this weight class one of the best to probably the worst. Don't worry, 40 year old Mark Coleman is coming back, not in August as planned though, he got hurt.

Fight I'd like to see: Randy Couture vs. Nogueira (chances I know unlikely)

Light Heavyweight:

1. Quinton Jackson
2. Dan Henderson
3. Maurcio 'Shogun' Rua
4. Chuck Liddell
5. Forrest Griffin
6. Lyoto Machida
7. Wanderlei Silva
8. Keith Jardine
9. Thiago Silva
10. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou

This division is stacked. 10 quaility guys here with Rashad Evans and others knocking at the door. Tito Ortiz would still be on my list, but he confirmed that 100% he would move on. I'm going to miss Tito and feel that he has some great fights left in him. When was the last time Rampage fought? Damn reality shows kill some of these match ups. You can make lots of intriguing fights ! though from the light heavyweights.

Fight I'd like ! to see: Wanderlei Silva vs. Lyoto Machida

Middleweight:

1. Anderson Silva
2. Dan Henderson
3. Rich Franklin
4. Nathan Marquardt
5. Yushin Okami
6. Chris Leben
7. Patrick Cote
8. Jason MacDonald
9. Nathan Quarry
10. Michael Bisping

Not a lot has changed in the past month or so in the middleweight division. It's really Anderon Silva at the top then a serious drop off. Not sure what weight class Dan Henderson is going to stick to, if he'll stick to one at all. Leben vs. Bisping would have been awesome, you know, if Leben didn't have to go to jail. I'd still like to see it, but not as much as...

Fight I'd like to see: Dan Henderson vs. Rich Franklin

Welterweight:

1. Georges St. Pierre
2. Jon Fitch
3. Matt Serra
4. Matt Hughes
5. Josh Koscheck
6. Diego Sanchez
7. Marcus Davis
8. Karo Parisyan
9. Thiago Alves
1! 0. Mike Swick

Perhaps the deepest division in the UFC there are a ton of great welterweights. GSP has proven he is the cream of the crop, and maybe there is a potential GSP vs. Penn II in the works. Well first St. Pierre will face Jon Fitch. The rest of the guys in the top 10 all want shots at the title, but it may take some time. Less than two weeks away from Hughes vs. Alves and Davis vs. Swick. It'll be a great day for welterweights on June 7th.

Fight I'd like to see: Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra

Lightweight:

1. BJ Penn
2. Sean Sherk
3. Joe Stevenson
4. Kenny Florian
5. Roger Huerta
6. Tyson Griffin
7. Clay Guida
8. Spencer Fisher
9. Nate Diaz
10. Frankie Edgar

No question about it now, B.J. Penn is the best lightweight in the UFC. An impressive win over Sean Sherk proved that last weekend. The idea now is for Penn to face the winne! r of Florian and Huerta when those two fight in August. Will h! e fight GSP or the winner or both? Time will tell. I'm also not convinced anyone else can beat Sherk in this division. Looks top heavy to me.

Fight I'd like to see: Joe Stevenson vs. Nate Diaz

Mark Munoz gets his head kicked into the 1st row

For those of you that watched UFC 96, you got to see some exciting finishes to fights. Matt Brown's destruction of Pete Sell was pretty entertaining, as was Shane Carwin's comeback KO over Gabriel Gonzaga. However, neither can hold a candle to Matt Hamill's devastating head kick of Mark Munoz. I've embedded the video below, but I apologize in advance for the shitty quality. It's clearly some bootleg ripoff off some dude's TV with a camcorder. If you want, follow the link to mmatko.com below to see a clearer picture. Munoz was down and out cold for almost five minutes before exiting the cage under his own power. For "The Hammer", this was a much needed win and what better than to do it in exciting fashion. It also earned him KO of the night and a much welcomed $60,000 bonus. We'll go ahead and call this the KO Clip of the Week.

And the link to mmatko.com:

http://www.mmatko.com/matt-hamill-vs-mark-munoz-fight-video-ufc-96/

Enjoy. I've watched this clip about 100 times since Saturday night. It doesn't seem to get old for me.

BJal's Lock du Jour - Saturday, October 10

Welp, I guess sometimes people just get lucky. That's my only reaction after seeing Nevada paste Louisiana Tech 37-14. I honestly started to wonder if BJal would get a lock of the day right, and by god he's done it. To quote the immortal Joe Castiglione, "Can you believe it?!?!"

So today he looks to make it two in a row, and he's going with Virginia Tech (-13.5) hosting Boston College. Last night I told him I thought this game had upset written all over it, I was half in the bag and now I've had a chance to sleep it off, gather my sober thoughts and clearly assess what I think will happen. This game is probably going to be an absolute blowout. B.C. lost to a pedestrian Clemson team 25-7 on the road a few weeks ago, and they struggled at home against very mediocre ACC teams in Wake Forest and Florida State. I don't even know if B.C. will manage to score. This could be a shutout.

In other news, the Red Sox suck and the Yankees will win the World Series. M! y buddy Kevin put it best last night while we were watching the game...if A-Rod is going to go and do stuff like he did last night - hitting a 700ft moonshot off Joe Nathan in the 9th inning to tie a playoff game - there's no way the Yankees don't win the World Series. In fact, it wouldn't shock me if they just rolled through the rest of the postseason undefeated. This team is scary good, and when one of the best hitters in baseball, with a track record of failing in the postseason, decides to heat up...wow.

Jimmy the Greek will have his Week 5 NFL picks for you by tomorrow morning, so call you bookie and let him know to be on call. Also, I'll be posting postseason awards in the next few days. We had a healthy arguement last night about who should win the AL MVP. I completely disagree with the rest of the world, who thinks Joe Mauer is the easy, sexy pick. So for my awards, I'll break it down by who will win and who I think should win.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-3 Stuttgart

Stuttgart collected just their second victory over the season thanks to two goals by Julian Schieber against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Schieber scored in the 17th and 30th minutes for struggling Stuttgart before Frankfurt's Marco Russ was sent off in the 33rd.

Thomas Hitzlsperger ended all doubt about the result with the visitor's third goal early in the second half.

The victory came at just the right time for Stuttgart, who were lagging in the lower reaches of t! he Bundesliga with just five points from six games.

Markus Babbel's team are now 10th with eight points, just one place and two points behind Frankfurt.

In the early stages Frankfurt goalkeeper Oka Nikolov made two fine saves but blotted his copybook in the 17th minute, failing to punch away a cross from the right which Schieber volleyed into the empty net.

Stuttgart doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark, again through Schieber, who benefited from Russ' poor attempt at a clearance after a cross from the left.

Frankfurt went a man down just three minutes later as Russ was sent off for a foul committed while he was the last defender.

Stuttgart opened the second half with plenty of pressure and made it 3-0 in the 54th minute on a blast from 18 yards by Hitzlsperger, who ran onto a fine volleyed pass from Sami Khedira.

Hitzlsperger nearly matched Schieber's two goals but the German international's 20-yard blast hit the right pos! t with 21 minutes to play.

BATE Borisov 1 Everton 2

The Europa League match between BATE Borisov and Everton at the Borisov City Stadium on Thursday Oct 1, 2009.

Everton shrugged off the loss of 10 first team players to record a superb victory in the Europa League in Belarus thanks to Tim Cahill's goal 13 minutes from time.

In the process, David Moyes' side have taken a massive step towards securing a place in the next stage! after their second successive win in the group.

Cahill capped a superb comeback after Marouane Fellaini had hauled the Toffees level in the 68th minute with his first goal of the season.

It was no more than Everton deserved after Joseph Yobo became the latest casualty because of a thigh injury.

In his absence Tony Hibbert was drafted in alongside Sylvain Distin in central defence - and hardly put a foot wrong.

Hibbert had to look alert in the 12th minute when Maksim Skavysh skipped away and got in a crucial challenge.

Everton almost took the lead a minute later with Diniyar Bilyaletdinov left cursing his luck. The Russian winger saw his powerful 20-yard shot come back off the post after Ayegbeni Yakubu had carved out the opening.

BATE responded and made the breakthrough with Dmitri Likhtarovich scoring a goal out of the blue, latching onto a loose ball 30 yards out and th! umping a shot high over goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Th! at got t he home crowd going and gave BATE an early boost - they lost their opening game to Benfica.

Everton almost drew level in the 26th minute when Yakubu released Cahill inside the six-yard box - but the Australian midfielder failed to get a decent connection and his effort was deflected wide. The Australian was left shaking his head in frustration after failing to take a clear chance.

Everton again pushed forward in the 37th minute and Fellaini laid the ball back to Leon Osman, skipper on the night, but his effort was blocked.

BATE, who drew twice with Juventus in the Champions League last season, then found themselves on the back foot though three minutes later.

It needed a timely clearance from Igor Shitov to prevent Yakubu from racing clear on goal, then Osman got clear inside the area after 54 minutes but his shot was scrambled to safety.

Three minutes later Jo peeled away from his marker and got on th! e end of a cross from Yakubu. However his soft header was easily taken by the goalkeeper.

BATE were not content to sit on their lead, however, and kept pushing forward at every opportunity.

Aleksandr Pavlov steadied himself outside the area in the 61st minute but sent his shot wide of the target, before Yakubu was hauled back for moving into an offside position three minutes later following a pass from Gosling.

The Nigerian questioned the decision and it look as though he had a point.

Everton drew level in the 68th minute when BATE failed to deal with a Leighton Baines free-kick. Fellaini got on the end of it at the far post and found the corner of the net.

Everton went ahead in the 77th minute after a swift counter-attack that stunned the hosts. Bilyaletdinov headed the ball on and Cahill sprung the offside trap before hoisting a shot over the goalkeeper.

It was a remarkable turnaround b! y Everton and testimony to their fighting spirit after such! an indi fferent first half.

Masakadza stars in Zim win

Opener Hamilton Masakadza struck the second-highest ODI score by a Zimbabwean to lead his side to a 142-run win over Kenya and wrap up their series 4-1.

The 26-year-old right-hander batted through Zimbabwe's innings to score 178 of his side's 329 for three.

It was Masakadza's third ODI century of his career - he also hit 156 in the opening game of the series - and included 17 fours and five sixes.

Kenya could muster just 187 all out in their reply to allow Z! imbabwe to register their biggest ever win in terms of runs on home soil, surpassing the 131-run win over England in 1999.

Chris Mpofu was the pick of Zimbabwe's bowlers as he claimed three for 44 while Jimmy Kamande top-scored for the tourists with 37.

Meanwhile, Kenya batsman Alex Obanda was fined 15% of his match for a breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during his side's six-wicket defeat yesterday.

Obanda remained at the crease and shook his head for "a substantial period of time" after his dismissal.

Valentino Rossi claims pole at Sepang as another MotoGP title moves closer

Valentino Rossi took another confident step towards wrapping up the MotoGP title at Sepang on Sunday as he claimed a comfortable pole position.

The Italian clocked two minutes and 0.518 seconds to beat title rival and Fiat Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo to top spot by over half a second.

Lorenzo's fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa completes the front row for Repsol Honda, with Australian Casey Stoner fourth for Ducati Marlboro after being deprived of a front-row spot late on in a session contested in sweltering heat and humidity.

Rossi set the early pace in the hour-long session, but Stoner lowered his mark shortly after the 20-minute mark with a lap of 2:01.445.

But Rossi, chasing a seventh world title in the top MotoGP category and his ninth overall, regained top spot with 25 minutes remaining in 2:01.210.

Nobody was able to challenge his lead and the 30-year-old was left to race purely to lower his own leading time, providing the crowd with a champagne finish as his eventual pole mark saw him break the lap record two minutes from the end of the session.

There was still time for Lorenzo to snatch second place in the closing seconds, with Pedrosa also nipping in ahead of Stoner for third.

Rossi, who has had five wins and two other podium finishes from nine races at the Malaysian circuit, holds a 38-point advantage in the standings after nearest challenger Lorenzo's fourth fall of the season last weekend in Australia! .

He needs only to finish in the top four in tomorrow! 's 21-la p race to secure the title, even if Lorenzo wins.

Nadal questions ATP role in Agassi case

Rafael Nadal admits he was shocked to learn of Andre Agassi's drugs revelations and concerned that the American avoided punishment.

Agassi reveals in his new autobiography that he used crystal meth in 1997, the worst year of his career, and lied to the Association of Tennis Professionals when he was asked to explain a failed drugs test.

The tennis authorities have come under fire since Agassi's disclosure, with the worry that he was cleared because his explanation ! was taken as fact.

World number two Nadal said: "If the ATP covered for Agassi then I think that's dreadful.

"If they covered for the player and punished others for doing the same kind of thing then that would seem to me to be a lack of respect for all sportsmen."

Roger Federer, the world number one, was also stunned by Agassi's story.

Federer said: "It was a shock when I heard. I am disappointed and I hope there are no more cases in future."

Totti ha in testa un altro record

di Rocco Fortunato
fonte:laroma24.it

Modena, irrompe Gnocchi «Fatemi debuttare in B. Apolloni?

«Certo, domenica saranno miei ospiti a »Gnok Calcio Show«. Le gare du! rano 90 minuti, no? Altrimenti facciamo finire tutto all'80'. Giocavo a calcio insieme agli ex dirigenti Alberici e Bia, poi conosco Amadei e l'Immergas. Diciamo, dunque, che ho uno stretto legame d'affetto col Modena». Gicatore preferito? «Chissà...Io intanto provo a convincere Apolloni.

Rivoluzione Roma:Mancini e Molinaro

di Rocco Fortunato
fonte:sportmediaset.it

Staremo a vedere.

Juventus - Cagliari 2-3: Gran brutta figura quella della Torino bianconera all' Olimpico.

!
