2008 Orioles Fan Fest: Photo Gallery, Capturing The Sights & Sounds...

Orioles Fan Fest; Camden Yards, Balti! more, Md.

Here are some photos of the events surrounding Fan Fest, as huge crowd showed up and it was festive and interesting as always. I focused more on the media events this year, so I did some walking around the Yard.

I missed the majority of the players in the workout in the early afternoon, but I did the best I could...

Oriole Magic Comes Through Again; Os Down Astros, 6-5 & Wild Bill

The spirit of 'Will" Bill Hagy stayed alive last night as the Orioles pulled yet another come-from-behind win last night as they beat the Houston Astronauts (ok, the Astros), 6-5. The nail for the coffin for Houston came in the 8th inning, as Melvin Mora came through in the clutch -- with two outs, nevertheless -- hitting a double in the gap that would bring the Orioles back from a 5-4 deficit.

Like with most games as of late, the Orioles chipped away at their opponent's lead throughout the game and they were helped greatly by home runs by Aubrey Huff and Nick Markakis. As well, the Baltimore bullpen came through again when it was needed by pitching well over four innings, and George Sherill came through with his 23rd save.

Jim Johnson -- the ever so-clutch pitcher -- got his second win of the season. Oriole starter Garrett Olson looked really off last night, as he pitched only 4 2/3 and was charged with four run -- all earned.

Of course, las! t night will be remembered for two reasons -- they being Miguel Tejada and "Wild" Bill Hagy.

What Barack Obama Means To The MLB Free Agent Market...

In the jubilation of Barack Obama being named President-elect in some parts of the nation, Major League Baseball players and their agents have taken notice.

Despite Obama promising all Americans who make under $250,000 a tax cut, the current crop of free agents in the sport are a little concerned as to what could happen once he takes office.

I would assume this would not only affect baseba! ll players, but also those in the NBA, NFL, NHL and other high dollar sports.

With free agents Mark Teixiera and A.J. Burnett on the market -- this may be a small part as to where they sign, but this topic may be bigger than we all think.

Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun touched upon this evening, and good pal Ian from Sox and Dawgs buzzed me about this issue.
DANA POINT, Calif. -- Some baseball agents already are thinking about trying to beat a possible tax increase for their well-paid clients under an Obama administration.

President-elect Barack Obama has proposed increasing the top federal income tax rate from 35 percent to 39.6 percent, where it was under president Bill Clinton.

If signing bonuses are paid before Jan. 1, they likely would be taxed at the current rate and would ! not be subject to any increase.

"It's something we'! ll consi der," agent Craig Landis said Tuesday at the general managers' meetings. "Besides the federal issue, we have a state issue in some cases, anyway, where it's advantageous to take signing bonuses because of the state income tax. A Florida resident can take the signing bonus and not have to pay his team's state tax."

Obama's proposal would increase federal income tax on families earning more than $250,000 annually, money that would help finance a decrease for workers and families earning less than $200,000. It's also possible more income might be subject to the Social Security tax.

Next year's major league minimum is $400,000. Agent Scott Boras, negotiating eight- and possibly nine-figure deals for free agents Manny Ramirez and Mark Teixeira, already has thought about the possibility of asking for larger signing bonuses payable this year in some of his contracts.

At this point, I don't have much sympathy for ballplayers who complain about! the tax they are being levied when America is in an economic downturn, people are losing money in their 401K's, homes, and jobs.

Why would I, along with many fans who purchase tickets to events -- sometimes at a premium -- would have any heartfelt sorrow for athletes who at minimum make more than 20 times the national average salary?

With the Yankees and Mets opening up new ballparks in the next year, and salaries (still) escalating in sports, why should the average fan cry a river for these guys?

Everything is relative, right?

Pitcher Mark Hendrickson An Oriole...

I was about to head to sleep, but Ian from Sox and Dawgs sent me an email via a report from Roch Kubatko on MASNSports.com that the Orioles have come close to an agreement with hurler Mark Hendrickson.

Here's a bit more from the Orioles.com Spencer Fordin about the pitcher.
From the Orioles.com: The report said that any deal would be pending a physical examination and that an announcement could come early in the week. Hendrickson's agent told the Baltimore Sun last week that there was interest between the two sides, and t! he Orioles have consistently said they need to add multiple pitchers this offseason.

The Roundup: Women In Sports Event at the ESPN Zone; Quick Hits

Tonight, there was quite an interesting and candid conversation with some promiment Baltimore-area women who are involved in the sports industry to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The panelists included Katie Hoff – Olympic Swimming Medalist, Amber Theoharis – MASN Broadcaster, Missy Doherty -- Towson University Women's Lacrosse Head Coach, Hillary Fratzke -- Towson University All-American Lacrosse Player & Nicole Sherry – Orioles Head Groundskeeper.

They all discussed their careers, gender, the sports industry in general, influences, as well as the difficulties some faced as women in their respective fields. It's too bad that the crowd was somewhat sparse for the event; however, for those that were there, hearing the insight these from these esteemed women was nothing short of fun, inspiring, but also eye-opening. I'll try to transcribe or have a lengthy write-up and post images of the event -- as it was! that good -- however, it may take a while to do.

What to Do With Matt Wieters

It's no secret that everyone has had their eyes on Oriole standout prospect Matt Wieters, and the now the debate that many are having is this: should Matt Wieters start the season in Baltimore or Triple-A Norfolk?

A lot of people in the local and national media have had their say, and so far it looks as if the Baltimore Orioles will indeed have Wieters start off in Norfolk.

ESPN's Buster Olney looks at the situation with Wieters and gives his analysis:

Reimold's Walk-Off Homer Leads O's Over Jays in 11th; Baltimore Gets Three Game Sweep

What a day.

Nolan Reimold, who is still pretty much wet behind the ears in terms of his major league tenure, came through again today as he hit a game-winning home run (a three run shot) off Brian Wolfe in the 11th inning as Baltimore won on Thursday, 12-10, sweeping the three game set from Toronto.

In between meetings and work, I caught snippets of the game via MLB.com audio and figured after the Orioles were down 7-3 to Roy Halladay in the fifth inning, I assumed the game was over and resumed my day.

However, I managed to turn on the radio out of curiosity in my car as I left the offi! ce -- mainly to find out what the final result was around 4:30pm -- and to amazement, the game was still going on! The Orioles had come back thanks to a five run rally in the eighth; however, they blew a golden chance to take the lead as Nick Markakis plated the tying run, but an aggressive Adam Jones got thrown out at home.

Nolan Reimold Done For The Season...

It looks like Nolan Reimold is out for the season due to his nagging Achilles tendon. Now 2/3 of the young, much praised Orioles outfield has been shut down for the season...

Outfielder Nolan Reimold's first big league season, and most likely his chances at becoming American League Rookie of the Year, ended Friday when he was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

He will have surgery in Baltimore on Wednesday to repair the Achilles tendon in his left foot and will be sidelined for three to four months.

Reimold, who led all AL rookies in homers (15), on-base percentage (.365) and slugging percentage (.466), is hopeful that he will be ready for the start of spring training in February.

"I hate to stop playing now, but I think going forward this is probably the best decision," said Reimold, who finishes the season with a .279 average in 104 ga! mes after being recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on May 14.

The Orioles will add outfielder Lou Montanez to the roster for the final two weeks of the season. Montanez, who missed most of the season with torn ligaments in his right thumb, was sent home after a brief rehab stint in the minors earlier this month.

It's sad to see as he was having a great rookie season and was in the chase for the ROY award; however, at this point, it's safe to assume he's going to be the regular left fielder in 2010 and there's no point having him play the rest of the current season. Well, it looks like he'll be ready for the 2010 season, and there's little point seeing him take a chance on further injuring himself plus allowing one problem to become something else.

If there's a positive out of this, Felix Pie, Jeff Fiorentino and Luke Scott should see even more playing time in the outfield.

Big Names Still In Play As Deadline Closes In

Well we've got about 40 minutes to go until the NHL trade deadline @ 3pm ET.

Typically the last half hour is the craziest and trades will trickle through up until 6pm, as the NHL approves trades that were faxed to the league office in New York.

Here's a list of the players that are expected to be traded that have yet to be moved (in no particular order):

- Nik Antropov
- Dominic Moore
- Jay Bouwmeester
- Derek Morris
- Chris Neil

And the less likely to be traded Keith Tkachuk and Tomas Kaberle

According to Michael Russo of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis "Marian Gaborik is in play right now, meaning the Wild's working the phones"

Only 2 Playoff Spots Up For Grabs

Blues Re-Sign Keith Tkachuk

According to Sporting News:

The St. Louis Blues are bringing back veteran forward Keith Tkachuk, who signed a one-year deal today worth $2.15 million that includes a no-movement clause.
Tkachuk, 37, could've became an unrestricted free agent next week. He has played 8 seasons with the Blues, he had 25 goals and 49 points last season.

Not surprising as it was rumored for quite some time that Tkachuk wanted to remain in St.Louis. It's also not surprising that the deal is for less money than he made last season, in 2008-09 he made $4.5M and had a cap hit of $4M.

Tujuh menit berselang Inter kembali mendapat dua peluang. Menit ke-12 ! Milito t ak mampu memanfaatkan assist sundulan Thiago Motta dengan baik.

Setelah ditekan di 20 menit pertama, Parma pun memperoleh peluang pertamanya di menit ke-22. Tendangan keras Jonathan Biabiany masih melayang di atas mistar gawang Julio Cesar.

Pada menit ke-37 Sneijder kembali mendapat peluang mencetak gol. Gelandang anyar Nerazzurri ini berhasil berhasil melewati satu pemain bertahan Parma dan melepaskan tembakan, namun tembakannya masih belum menemui sasaran. Skor imbang 0 - 0 bertahan hingga turun minum.

Tiga menit setelahnya, Cristiano Zaccardo hampir membobol jala Inter lewat sundulannya memanfaatkan situasi corner.

Milito pun memantapkan kemenangan timnya dua menit jelang laga berakhir.

Skor 2-0 pun menghiasi papan skor ketika peluit panjang berbunyi.

Liga Spanyol 2009/2010 | Kaka Incar Pemain Terbaik Dunia Lagi

Kaka
Usai mengantar AC Milan menjuarai Liga Champions, Kaka dianugrahi penghargaan pemain terbaik dunia.

Spurs Not In For Baptista

By Jaymes Payten-Marsh
For THBN

Reports that Spurs have made a £12.5 million offer for Sevilla's Brazilian superstar Julio Baptista are untrue.

Sevilla president Jose Maria Del Nido said: "There are now more offers on the table than the one from Arsenal. Another English team has made a bid."

The Sun has said that it maybe Tottenham that put in the bid, but unfortunately, it is Manchester United that have made the increased offer.

The confusion came when Baptista was interview and asked what team he would like to play for in the Premiership. He went on to say that he always supported Tottenham Hotspur while in Brazil and continued to follow them in Spain.

Reports put one and one together and came up with three.

Shame really, as he would have been a hit down at the Lane. He has perfect control, is a great header of the ball and a pretty good finisher also.

It seems as thoug! h we are now being linked with one player everyday on average. I wish it would stop!

We need an attacking central midfielder. After we land one, they can link us with whomever they please.

Spurs 4 - 0 Roma

Lennon scores!!

A combination of passes and beautiful play between Jenas, Bentley, and Dos Santos, put Lennon through for him to score our fourth.

Am I reading this right? Man U 0-2 Spurs?

Oh well, let's just hope we don't let in 4 goals.

Milan Coba Boyong Andre Santos

MILAN - AC Milan dipastikan akan mencoba memboyong defender Andre Santos dari Corinthians, klub di Liga Brasil. Berbicara kepada calciomercato.com, Roberto Queiroz de Andrade -- yang akan menjadi salah satu agen transfer Andre Santos -- mengatakan;

Leonardo Lebih Pilih Fabiano Ketimbang Huntelaar?

Presiden Sevilla Kini Benar-Benar Yakin Milan Tak Punya Dana

MILAN - Presiden Jose Maria del Nido menyebabkan pembicaraan ramai ketika mengatakan AC Milan tak punya cukup dana untuk memboyong penyerang Luis Fabiano dari Sevilla.
Begitu negosiasi kedua klub berakhir, sang presiden sekali lagi mendaratkan pukulan telak. Sekarang aku benar-benar yakin mereka tak punya dana."
Del Nido yakin, O Fabuloso pantas dibanderol €20 juta.

Bale Tertarik Ke Milan

Jelang Milan vs Inter : Mourinho Jadi Motivasi Tambahan Milan

Galliani Tak Menyesal Jual Gourcuff

Spalletti sendiri santer diberitakan menjadi kandidat kuat suksesornya.

However, Aquilani, who has a reputation for being susceptible to injury, has yet to play this season as he was signed when recovering from an ankle operation.

Benitez, though, has confirmed that the Italy international has stepped up his rehabilitation by beginning running at the Reds' Melwood training ground.

The Liverpool boss has now hinted Aquilani could return ahead of schedule, telling the club's official website: "He's going forward, progressing and he started running. If that goes okay then everything will go a bit faster.

But Benitez has not set a timescale for Aquilani's comeback, despite reports that the midfielder could be ready to face Sunderland in mid-October.

"We have not set a target or any time, but he's doing well," said the Spaniard.

Bersama Ajax Amsterdam, Van de Sar membawa Ajax menjuarai piala UEFA tahun 1991-1992 dam UEFA Champion League 2 tahun kemudian. Membawa timnya menjuarai Eropa, dia pun terpilih menjadi kiper terbaik Eropa tahun 1995.

Bersama The Cottagers, Van de Sar melakoni 129 caps.

JUVE FERMATA A SAN PIETROBURGO

I prossimi mesi saranno decisivi.

Abbiati, Dida, Kalac
Antonini, Bonera, Darmian, Favalli, Kaladze, Maldini, Zambrotta
Ambrosini, Cardacio, Emerson, Flamini, Gattuso
Borriello, Kakà,! Seedorf, Pato, Schevchenko e Ronaldinho.

Siena 1-2 Roma: Riise Rocket Sees Ranieri Begin With A Win

Tinkerman' starts with a win.

Sep 13, 2009 9:55:26 AM

Philippe Mexes - Roma (Grazia Neri)
Philippe Mexes - Roma (Grazia Neri)

Claudio Ranieri's reign as Roma coach began with a win as a ferocious 89th minute free kick from substitute John Arne Riise saw off ten-man Siena at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Siena had taken the lead in the first half through Massimo Maccarone, but Philippe Mexes equalized with 17 minutes remaining, and Ri! ise took full advantage of Paul Codrea's red card to steal the three points at the end.

The Giallorossi came into the clash with their injury situation slowly clearing up, although Alexander Doni and Cicinho were still sidelined. Juan returned to the line-up, while David Pizarro supported lone striker Francesco Totti in a very defensive 4-4-1-1.

With the exception of injured defender Luca Rossettini, Siena had virtually a clean bill of health as they looked for a repeat of their week 2 victory over Cagliari. Emanuele Calaio and Maccarone led the offensive charge.

Roma started the game the better, with Totti curling just over and Gianluca Curci coming to the rescue from Simone Perrotta.

However, the Giallorossi received a blow just past the quarter-hour mark as Matteo Brighi was forced off injured to be replaced by Julio Baptista.

This seemed to have a negative effect on the away side as Siena found it easier to attack w! ith the defensive Brighi off. On 26 minutes the Tuscans broke ! the dead lock as Maccarone turned Philippe Mexes in the box and smashed the ball into the roof of the net. It was a wonderful individual effort.

Roma tried to react through Baptista, who sliced wide after a great pass from Pizarro.

On 38 minutes 'The Beast' went close with a free kick that deflected and span just past the post. Moments later Emanuele Calaio's mishit cross almost looped in over Julio Sergio, but it was just too high.

Maccarone broke the deadlock

There were no changes at half time. Roma attempted to up the tempo, yet it was Siena who threatened first as Maccarone was released in the left channel, but his first touch was poor and Marco Cassetti cleared.

On 55 minutes Roma had a golden chance to equalize as the ball broke to Simone Perrotta inside the area, but he delayed too long a! nd a defender managed to block the ball.

Despite this chance, Roma were lacking ideas going forward - perhaps not helped by Ranieri's ultra-defensive system.

Just past the hour mark, 'Tinkerman' made his second change of the game, introducing Riise for Juan. Siena looked to tighten up the ship as midfielder Lukas Jarolim replaced striker Calaio.

Ranieri played his final card as he threw on Mirko Vucinic for Baptista. A couple of minutes later Roma were level as Totti cut the ball back to Mexes, who had stayed forward, and the Frenchman volleyed the ball into the ground and past Curci.

The tiring Maccarone made way for Reginaldo, but with 12 minutes to go Siena received another blow as Paul Codrea received his marching orders for a second yellow card after fouling Totti.

Roma threw men forward in the closing stages, and Vucinic saw a shot blocked. Time seemed to be running out but in the 89th minute the Gialloross! i found a winner as Riise unleashed a ferocious 20-yard! free ki ck that was too hot for Curci to handle as it almost put a hole in the back of the net.

This win means that Roma are finally off the mark in Serie A, and they join Siena on three points from as many games.

Vidic claims Torres one of the best strikers

Manchester United star Nemanja Vidic believes the toughest strikers he has ever faced in the Champions League are from Liverpool, Barcelona and Inter Milan.

The towering Serbian named Fernando Torres, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto'o as the best forwards he has played against in Europe, suggesting all of the aforementioned are currently on top of their games.

Vidic told "It's tough to pick out one name when it comes to Europe's best strikers but if I cou! ld pick three I'd select Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Zlatan Ibrahimovic."

"These guys are at the top of their game."

Benitez defends Carragher

The Reds have made a stuttering start to the new Premier League season, losing 2-1 to Tottenham on the opening weekend and later slipping up at home to Aston Villa.

They have conceded seven goals in five games but Benitez believes it is unfair for the defenders to be blamed for poor performances.

Carragher has been singled out by some pundits who have suggested the 31-year-old no longer has the pace and fitness to perform as consistently as he has in the past.

However, Benitez has no such doubts and maintains that Carragher will continue to play a key role this term.

"When the team hasn't done well it is the defenders who take the rap," Benitez said in the Daily Star Sunday.

"When you are losing, they will get criticised more than the strikers.

"Jamie is still a top player. He's training as always. He's fit and quick and he will always be the same.

"He's a professional who has taken care of himself,! so I don't see him slowing down quickly."

Focus
Benitez accepts that Carragher has perhaps had to shoulder too much of the responsibility in terms of making the team a cohesive unit and he has called on other players to do more.

"It depends now on the team. If they help the defenders it will be easy for the defenders to play well," he explained.

"It's more difficult for Carragher because he's been playing with a lot of team-mates.

"He likes to talk but the other players around him are important too. If he doesn't need to be talking much it's easier for him to focus on his own game."

Radcliffe set for New York test

Paula Radcliffe
Radcliffe's last race was 10 months ago in New York

Paula Radcliffe will run in the New York City half-marathon on Sunday.

It is Radcliffe's first race since the New York marathon which she won 10 months ago, having had bunion surgery on her right foot in March.

The 35-year-old marathon world record holder will use the race to gauge whether she is fit to run at the World Championships in Berlin.

Radcliffe missed the London Marathon in March and has since been training at high altitude and recovering in France.

"Recently, my training has started to go very well," said Radcliffe.

"I'm definitely ready to run a half-marathon, and the NYC half-marathon will give me important feedback about where I am.

"After the race in New York, I will consult with my coaching and medical teams and we will make the final determination as to whether I am ready to run the marathon in Berlin.

"It is cert! ainly my hope to compete there."

T he NYC half-marathon, runs from Central Park through Times Square to Battery Park at the southern end of Manhattan and will be Radcliffe's first half-marathon on North American soil.

It is also her first half-marathon since her second-placed finish behind American Kara Goucher at the Great North Run in 2007.

The IAAF World Championships run from 15-23 August.

McLaren is hoping for Kent future

Ryan McLaren
McLaren has been popular with the Kent supporters during his time at the club

Kent all-rounder Ryan McLaren harbours ambitions to return to the county, despite committing himself to play in his native South Africa.

He will play for Free-State side Eagles at the end o! f the English season thus surrendering his Kolpak status.

But McLaren hopes to return to Kent at some point in the future: "I'm leaving Kent as a much better cricketer.

"Hopefully I can come back as an overseas player at some stage," he told BBC Radio Kent.

"I don't fit the Kolpak requirement but with two overseas players allowed in the Twenty20 competition, I might be able to get involved there."

McLaren has spent three successful seasons at the St. Lawrence ground, and helped Kent secure the Twenty20 title in his first season, taking a hat-trick in the final. In 2008 he was selected by South Africa to play against Kenya and Bangladesh but he was contracted to Kent for the 2009 season.

Despite being on the radar of the selectors, McLaren conced! es that he does not expect to walk straight into the national ! side.

"I'm just going back to fall in the system. I'm not going in with any expectations. If you look at the South African side, they're extremely settled and performing very well," he added.

"I want to play good cricket. If things work out, and I get the opportunity to be selected then fine but I'll take it one step at a time."
